ELT Committee Minutes 3/20/07
Posted by Robert Simpson on March 20, 2007
Today’s mtg. focused on looking at the submitted schedules by grade level. Mr. DeVito began by asking about comments regarding a 3:15 dismissal for students under an ELT plan. There were considerations on both sides but the majority of comments supported working with the 3:15 student dismissal.
- Bob Simpson spoke about integrating PBU work into the ELT plan based on data gathered through student surveys. Handouts were distributed listing some available PBU’s by grade level aligned to the National Educational Technology Standards. (SeeĀ below, use the slider to magnify the image)
Julie Jones proposed exploring PBU’s during computer times during 2007/2008. - Mr. DeVito will meet with exploratory teachers and look at their possible revised schedules under ELT
- More information will be shared during Monday’s staff meeting.
- Ideas, staggered block times, priorities (Reading Workshop, pull out times for Sped. and Title One teachers, lunch/recess/snack, enrichment choices….) may be topics for ELT committee and grade level input.
- Gerry Ruane will be here next Wed.@ 2:30 and will address some ELT questions.
ELT committee will meet next Wed. @ 3:00 PM 3/28/07.

Is there a possibility that a survey of the teachers could be taken regarding the 7:45a.m. vs the 8:00a.m. starting time of the school day before the final schedule is made?

I believe that Julie said the PBU’s should wait until the 2008-2009 school year and that we should see how the new schedule works before adding other things.
Also, I hope that when we bargain for next year, start times and ending times, as well as compensation, are discussed and voted on – by everyone.

Bonnie, As I said during our ELT committee meeting, PBUs are offered as a goal for each grade level in the context of implementing the National Education Technology Standards (NETS). Before a PBU can be successfully implemented we need to work on the first five standards. If we follow the model we used with the Saugus Iron Works we can use next year to lay the groundwork to implement PBUs in the 2008-09 school year. I should reiterate that PBUs will easily meet teacher’s need to provide high quality enrichment activities using both hands-on and Internet activities.

Is there confusion around how much more time is required? The length of the day is not increasing by 25%, but time in learning is. If we are being compensated for the time we are required to be in the building than the plan is fair. If, however, you believe that your salary is purely a function of face time with students then perhaps it’s not. It’s an interesting argument that would not likely occur in the private sector.
